Shanghai Dalian Lake Returning Ponds to Wetlands Ecological Restoration Project

I. Project Overview

Dalian Lake restoration project is a water source rehabilitation demonstration project launched by WWF, under the support of the “HSBC Climate Partnership” program; in sense of the concerns about the drinking water safety agricultural pollution and community living pollution must be solved as soon as possible. The project was launched for trying to solve the agricultural non-point source pollution and finally we choose Dalian Lake in Megalopolis Shanghai as domestic community pollution in the water source area

The project is located in northeast of Dalian Lake(121°00′19.64′′~121°00′36.86′′E,31°04′18.57′′~31°04′19.03′′N), which belongs to a part of “Shanghai Dianshan Lake Wetland Restoration Engineering Area Project” wetland restoration and rebuilt area, the area is originally made up of several ponds. Influenced by fish culturing in ponds, the water quality in ponds is worse Ⅴdegree, mainly polluted by total phosphorus, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand. The project will return total 10 ha area of engineering ponds to wetlands, and total investment of project construction is about 3.97 million Yuan.

II. Project Measures

Through several measures including dredging river, shaping terrain, constructing ecological slope and rapid infiltration system, adjusting the water system, configuring plants and animals, we construct the area into a variable and consecutively habitat base suitable for plants and animals living by reconstructed micro-slope in ponds. Then we carry out the plants and animal’s introduction project on the pond base, in order to create healthy water ecological system which can be self-repaired and developed.

III. Project Benefits

After the implementation of the project, the water nitrogen and phosphorus are effectively removed. The content of chemical oxygen demand decreased, and the dissolved oxygen content increased. Phytoplankton species increased and can be effectively controlled, especially the amount of cyanobacteria is reduced, and the water quality in the area has been improved. The average value of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen in the repaired area is 0.12mg/L, 0.42 mg/L, 0.06 mg/L, 0.11 mg/L, respectively reduced by 62.50%, 72.19%, 92.86%, 63.33%. the contrast site out of the repaired area, the average value of chemical oxygen demand is 1.90mg/L, reduced by 8.92%, the average value of oxygen content is 8.11mg/L, respectively increased by 11.10%.
